Motorists cop fuel hike

May 12, 2008

Unleaded petrol prices at BP Kardinya hit record levels on May 12 - ImagePERTH motorists are struggling to cope with rising fuel costs, as unleaded petrol hit an all time high of 155.9¢ a litre on May 12.

Consumer protection department spokesman Mike Winchester said the price hike had been “unpredictable”.

“The fuel industry usually sets new prices about every 14 days,” he said. “However, this jump appears to have increased outside of the cycle.”

Many locals are feeling the pinch, with fuel prices almost doubling since January 2001.

Murdoch uni veterinary science student Brandon Meta said he had to budget more on fuel now.

“The cost is obviously higher than two years ago, and I can spend less on other miscellaneous commodities,” Mr Meta said. “Now I only go out when necessary and I plan my route to travel the shortest distance between destinations.”

Other motorists resort to practical methods to save petrol.

Pattarapong Anjanrhate, a Thai national working as a pizza delivery man in Fremantle, said he regularly services his car and checks his tyre pressure.

“Less speeding, less rapid acceleration, and less braking help save petrol,” he said. “Checking your air filters regularly helps burn the petrol more efficiently too.”

Others who are taking the fuel hike in their stride, and feel rising fuel prices do come with benefits.

Client administrator, Jamie Parravicini, said although he was annoyed with rising fuel costs, he understands that economic reasons are underpinning the hike.

“I actually think it is a good thing,” Mr Parravicini said. “It’s harsh on four-wheel drive owners, but it’s good for the environment.”
