Celebrate fair trade with a coffee break

by Justin Macdonald

May 8, 2008

Fair Trade Fortnight is encouraging all Australians to recognise the importance of fair trade in a novel way-with a cup of coffee.

Patty Cullen, of Oxfam WA, tells eMU News a centrepiece of this year’s Fair Trade Fortnight, which runs from May 3-18, is the Fairtrade Coffee Break campaign.

“It’s very simple to take part in Fairtrade Coffee Break,” Mr Cullen says. “All you have to do register online for a free Fairtrade Coffee Break pack, which contains Fairtrade coffee, as well as a DVD about fairtrade coffee.”

Perth is also playing host to a number of exhibitions that celebrate and advertise the importance of practicing fair trade.

Robert Roberts, the convenor of the WA Fair Trade Collective, told eMU News his group has put together the Fair Trade Fiesta, which is brand new for this year’s Fair Trade Fortnight.

According to Mr Roberts, the fiesta, which takes place on Sunday May 11 at the Bakery Artrage Complex in Northbridge will include a “short film festival on fair trade, as well as an ethical and lifestyle fashion show”.

The fiesta will also feature a world music concert featuring three bands- Zigatango, Exodus, and The Sneaky Weasel Gang.
