Freo to celebrate May Day '08

May 1, 2008
WITH the Howard government defeated, UnionsWA says May Day celebrations on May 4 are an opportunity to maintain pressure on Kevin Rudd’s government to keep their industrial promises.
“The Howard government were the ones who introduced AWAs and they were going to erode worker’s rights further [if re-elected],” UnionsWA campaigner Sandra Wright told eMU News. “But we have to work with, and keep the pressure on, the Rudd government to make sure they don’t follow the same path.”
The annual May Day celebrations kick off at noon on Sunday, May 4 at Fremantle’s Esplanade Reserve.
“[May Day 2008] has a very big line-up,” Ms Wright said. “Libby Hammer [and her band] Hip Mo Toast will be playing at around 1:30pm.
“It will also feature free activities for the kids, including a bouncy castle and the always popular petting zoo, which is back by popular demand.”
There’ll also be free food and ice cream.
Ms Wright told eMU News that, with the defeat of the Howard government, one barrier to protecting workers’ rights had been removed.
