Immigrant slams immigrants

by Farlina Zailanni

April 28, 2008

ATTITUDES revealed in a survey, showing 51.3 per cent of born and bred Aussies living in high immigrant areas reckon there’s too many immigrants, are not confined to that group.

Bryan Ng said he moved from his Winthrop home because there were too many Asian immigrants settling in the suburb.

“I didn’t pay so much for my relocation costs only to live in the mini-version of the country I left,” said Mr Ng, who moved to Perth in 1983.

He felt the findings of the Mapping Social Cohesion Survey released by Monash University on April 21 reflected how he felt.

“There should be a system that spreads out ethnic population evenly,” Mr Ng said.

However, a spokeswoman of the North Perth-based Multicultural Services Centre disputed the findings, saying the survey did not reflect Perth’s situation.

“Due to the very vast economic circumstances of migrants into Perth, the communities here are more diffused,” Shelia Rajan said.

She did however agree older born and bred Aussies made “little attempt to welcome [new migrants].”

“Some may feel that there is a mass influx of immigrants simply because they don’t venture far from home,” Ms Rajan added. “They probably keep seeing the same people.”
