That’s exactly the kind of thing you’ll find out at the annual Murdoch University ‘Be a Vet for a Day’, to be held this year on Sunday May 4.

Year 10, 11 and 12 students will get the opportunity to witness behind-the-scenes action and develop an insight into the life of a veterinary student and a practicing veterinarian.

“Many people have this idea about vet science that isn’t born out of reality,” says Andy David, Manager of the Office of Continuing Veterinary Education. “It isn’t all about hugging and kissing furry bunny rabbits.”

The event invites 60 students who are interested in pursuing a career in vet science to come and experience a hands-on interactive day of learning. They’ll practise ‘tipping’ sheep –i.e. laying them on their sides- and will be given the chance to participate in a clinical examination of a greyhound.

Students will then tour the uni’s vet farm, small animal hospital and horse hospital, followed by the anatomy museum- considered one of the best in Australia.

The day will also include a number of engaging talks from a variety of different vets, and an information session for parents and students.

Dr David says the feedback from previous “Be a Vet for a Day” events has been superb.

“Although some students do come in expecting to do open heart surgery, but it’s not like that,” he chuckles.

The cost of the day is $144 and there are only 14 places left, so call Dr David immediately on 9360 2104 if you’re interested.
