Murdoch goes anti-homophobe

by John Dobson

May 15, 2008

MURDOCH UNIVERSITY on May 15 held a day to take a stand against homophobia.

The Murdoch Guild Queer Collective organised the event as a prelude to the International Day Against Homophobia, slated for Saturday, May 17.

Guild Queer representative Emma Kingdon said the Murdoch day would help promote acceptance of homosexuals on campus. The stall in Bush Court included raffles, surveys, music, cakes, biscuits and jelly shots.

“There are some homophobic sectors, who still have no understanding, but the majority of the students and staff are accepting,” Ms Kingdon said. “The University is more accepting than the outside community, but I think society is getting a little more perceptive of the gay community.

“But we get negative comments from an array of people from different backgrounds, so it is not just one group that could to change.”
