Queer students get physical

by Caroline Smith

April 2, 2008

THE second annual Cross Campus Queer Games were set to kick off at Murdoch University on April 3, involving students from the universities around Perth.

The brainchild of Murdoch’s Queer Collective officer, Emma Kingdon, the games aim to raise health awareness within the bisexual and lesbian community in particular.

‘It’s important to draw attention to the fact that queers face the same health issues as their straight counterparts,’ Ms Kingdon said.

Murdoch won the games last year, and is proud to see them increase in strength. There’s an increase in the number of participants this time around – and they’ll be getting involved in events as diverse as volleyball, soccer and a quiz.

Photographs and reports from the day’s events will appear on the Gay in WA website, which will cover the games, and provide sample bags to all of the students taking part.

The games will be followed by a Winedown in the university tavern, and a meeting of cross campus Queer and Ally Networks. Guest speaker will be NUS Women’s Officer, Claire Tatyzo, who’s visiting WA at the moment.
