ANZAC vollies wanted

by Jasmin Rule

April 3, 2008

VOLUNTEERS are desperately needed to help with the fifth annual commemorative Anzac exhibition in the Fremantle town hall.

Fremantle council’s corporate events staffer Marie La Frenais is seeking 20 volunteers to guide visitors through the exhibition.

“It is important to remember fallen servicemen as they gave us the freedom and world we live in today,” Ms La Frenais said.  “It’s a great opportunity to show respect to people that have passed.”

Various groups from around Freo will take part, including the Naval Association, Vietnam veterans, and cadets. Anzac day celebrations kick off with a dawn service, followed by a parade, closing ceremony and concert along The Esplanade.

The concert, a first for the Anzac celebrations, will feature local country and western artists.

Ms La Frenais said volunteers will have a: “great opportunity to give back to the community and acknowledge and appreciate what the servicemen did for us - it’s a perfect reason”.

Royal Navy Association spokeswoman Maxine Stones said participants could look forward to a stroll down memory lane.

“It’s a time to share the memories of fellow patriots that people have served with or are serving with,” she said.

State president of the Vietnam Veterans Association, Richard Williams, said Anzac Day was a good opportunity to introduce the uninitiated to an Aussie tradition.

“Younger people and newcomers to the country can get an idea of a tradition in Australia and the spirit of the people,” he said. “There is more significance to the Vietnam veterans this year as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the battle of Long Tan.”

Fremantle mayor Peter Tagliaferri will march in the Anzac parade and will be part of the closing ceremony.

“That Anzac spirit lives on in all of us and is part of what makes us Australian,” Mr Tagliaferri said, “and it’s important we look back and honour all the servicemen and women who gave their lives fighting for this great country.”

The showcase in the town hall is free, and vollies are needed between the hours of 8am to 3pm on April 25.
