A PLAN by Bayswater council to plaster poles along Guildford Road with banners of indigenous and historic detail will be good for the community, says deputy mayor, Michael Sabatino.
A total of 20 banners, to be displayed on 10 poles, were presented to the 29 January, 2008 Council meeting of the Heritage Development Advisory Committee.
A proposal before the council would see the proposed banners display messages of welcome and thanks, and recognise local facilities, historic icons and indigenous artwork.
“I think it’s a great idea to include the indigenous people,” Cr Sabatino said. ”They have the history; they’ve lived along the Swan River.”
Several design concepts have been put forward for consideration, including historic banners reflecting the former Maylands Aerodrome, the Peninsula Hotel slated be turned into a Dome cafe, and Tranby House.
Cr Sabatino said the council would take a softly-softly approach to the banner designs.
“We’re going to make certain it doesn’t offend anyone,” said Cr Sabatino. “Obviously if it offends someone, we won’t do it.”
The estimated cost of designing and printing is around $300 per banner.
