Cockburn removes Australand advertorial

by Wilfred Lui

April 8, 2008

AN announcement on the Port Coogee project was last week removed from Cockburn council’s website, after eMU News probed into its appropriateness last week.

On April 1, we reported an advertorial for property developer Australand had appeared on the front page of the council’s website. By April 5, the announcement concerning bike paths on the locally-contentious development had been removed from the site.

Cockburn website coordinator Sandy Gaskett said she removed the announcement because there were new items to fill the front page.

“The article had been there for a month,” she said. “We needed to remove it to make more space for other announcements and news items.”

The relationship between Australand and the council is pending a Corruption and Crime Commission finding after it was revealed Australand had in 2005 made payments to mayor Stephen Lee’s re-election campaign.
