NORTH COTTESLOE Surf Life Saving Club had become a finalist in the prestigious Surf Life Saving Club of the Year award, which was set be announced on April 4.
Presented annually at the Australian Championships, the ceremony recognises the achievements of Australia’s 130,000 surf lifesavers, and the clubs they represent.
Club President Craig Smith-Gander thought the accolade was an important milestone for the club, established way back in 1918.
“It would be great for our members to receive this type of recognition amongst their peers in the sport,” Mr Smith-Gander said. “We had a successful season last year, and this combined with our committed approach, has allowed us to attain a nomination in this year’s national competition.”
The finalist selection process was not based on competitive results, but rather on inspirational application to surf lifesaving activities. Mr Smith-Gander felt this was a key component in attracting more people to lifesaving.
“We not only participate in the competitive aspects of surf lifesaving but also deal with the provision of beach patrols, junior activities, education and training,” he explained. “It is these aspects which set surf life saving apart from other sports, as competitive spirit is always closely matched with a sense of community service.”
With every state having a nominated entrant in the coveted club of the year award, Mr Smith-Gander hoped North Cottesloe could snatch the title for WA. North Cottesloe has 1500 members.
