A surreal time frame

May 2, 2008

Ann Hart’s piece “The Climatic Change” reflects Perth city’s fear of climate change and a piece of its cultural history. Photo: Gallery East. - ImageASIAN inspired Gallery East in North Fremantle launched its newest exhibition, “Cultural Playground – The Climatic Change” on May 2, to showcase one WA artist Ann Hart.

In her third exhibition at the gallery, Hart says her latest works are inspired by the great surrealist artists of the 20th century, such as Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte.

“It relates to Dali’s representational technique in creating near-photographic, dreamlike images which make the impossible seem possible,” says Hart.

Hart’s work encourages the viewer to view Perth’s cultural heart. Inclusion of familiar objects, such as the red Post Box and Grandfather Clock from the WA Museum bring history into the present, and allow the viewer to experience a days-gone-by feeling.

The largest piece in the exhibition, “The Climatic Change” reveals the ever changing cycle of culture. The painting represents the impact climate change is likely to have on Perth’s city.

“Art and culture are likened to hidden treasures frozen in time,” says Hart. “As the ice melts, its true identity is revealed.”

Gallery East director David Forrest says Hart’s work has a “playful tone about it” and is in itself a “cultural playground, bringing the old with the new.”

Hart’s work is on display at Gallery East until May 25.
