Vandalism up at Murdoch Uni Village

by Noorsureena Izham

April 14, 2008

VANDALISM at the Murdoch Uni Village is causing danger and inconvenience to a nearby retirement village, and to student residents, the village’s director says.

“The village residents have found destructing properties and causing damage that put people and properties at risk to be funny,” Carolyn Landesman said, “whereas it is not.

“And what saddens me is these students are our future leaders.”

Ms Landesman, said vandalism at the village had jumped markedly in 2008. She believed the vandalism was being caused by alcohol consumption among many of her resident students.

Footpath bollards and signposts are being erected to notify motorists and others of the vandals.

Village resident assistant Razeen Amran, suggested the village should have more resident assistants, and should consider installing CCTV cameras.

However, Ms Landesman did not agree with the CCTV call. She believed in trusting residents instead of invading their privacy. Despite the vandalism, M. Landesman considered Murdoch Uni Village residents to be the best-behaved student lodgers in WA.
