Funding boost for afterhours doctors

A STATE Government funding plan to ease the pressure on WA’s overstretched hospital emergency departments could be scuttled before it has even begun.
The $8.4 million scheme to provide incentives for general practices to extend their opening hours may falter because of a shortage of doctors. Figures released last year show WA needs another 600 doctors to meet current demand. A recent survey of WA medical students found the shortage was not likely to ease, with just 17 per cent planning to become general practitioners once they graduated

Milk and cereal mightier for muscles

FORGET fancy sports drinks, a humble bowl of cereal and milk will do the same job.
A study by the University of Texas in Austin has found a bowl of non-fat milk and cereal is effective for helping muscle recovery after moderate exercise. Study leader Lynne Kammer said there was no difference between the ability of carbonated sports drinks and a bowl of wholegrain cereal to replenish muscles. The study was published on May 14 and involved 12 cyclists, eight males and four females

No recovery for CY O’Connor beach

EROSION at CY O’Connor Beach south of Fremantle cannot be reversed, according to a leading WA oceanographer.
University of Western Australia oceanographer Charitha Pattiaratchi said the badly eroded CY O’Connor Beach would likely suffer further damage in the face of weather and coastal developments, including the South Beach and Coogee Marina developments. Professor Pattiaratchi said the popular family beach would crumble away if the erosion continued at its current rate, making it dangerous and inaccessible to the public

Fatal virus in WA’s north

A SECOND case of the rare and potentially fatal Murray Valley Encephalitis virus has been identified in the north of WA.
A Port Hedland man is in a serious condition in Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital after being diagnosed with the mosquito-borne illness. Confirmation of a second MVE case in as many months has prompted the Department of Health to renew a warning to residents and visitors in northern WA to take extra care against mosquito bites

FREMANTLE’S history and heritage will be the focus of celebrations in the port city later this month.
Guided walks, exhibitions, events and workshops will all be on offer at this year’s Fremantle Heritage Festival which will run for a week beginning on May 29. Many of the activities are free of charge and will take place at various venues around Fremantle. Fremantle City Council festival and events officer Siobhan Wood said the festival would showcase Fremantle’s built and natural heritage

WA leads gene breakthrough

The Western Australian Institute for Medical Research has been instrumental in the discovery of new genes that will increase understanding of what causes diabetes type 1 and could lead to new treatment options.
Professor Grant Morahan from WAIMR led the Asia Pacific arm of an international research group that recently identified more than 40 genes connected with type 1 diabetes, including 25 new genes that identify risk factors for the disease

POLICE say Monday’s shooting in Jandakot was not related to bikie conflict and is unlikely to spark a gang war.
Assistant Commissioner Wayne Gregson told a packed press conference yesterday there was no suggestion the shootout was gang related but was most probably the end result of a drug deal gone wrong. Police have named the two men injured in the shootout that happened in Peppworth Place on Monday and say both have convictions for drug offences

Northbridge Link given final green light by Budget

PERTH’S city centre will undergo a dramatic revamp later this year when the long-awaited Northbridge Link development commences.
The Link is a joint initiative between the City of Perth, the East Perth Redevelopment Authority and the Public Transport Authority that involves undergrounding the Wellington bus station and the Fremantle rail line from Perth to Lake Street

Labor heartland falls

THE Greens historic Fremantle victory over the weekend points to a widening split in grassroots Labor support, according to Murdoch University politics lecturer Janice Dudley.
Adele Carles created political history on Saturday night with an emphatic victory in the Fremantle by-election. Until Saturday, the ALP had held the port seat for 85 years. The popular local lawyer became the first Greens candidate to win a seat in the lower house of any state parliament across Australia

Lead shipments from July

Lead could be shipped through Fremantle as early as July, according to Magellan Metals.
Magellan Metals was banned from exporting lead from its Wiluna mine through the Esperance Port in March 2007 after it was found to be responsible for the contamination of wildlife, residents and rainwater tanks in Esperance. Magellan’s director of corporate responsibility John Yeates said the company would likely start shipping any time from July onwards
