Stadium Delayed?

Redevelopment plans for Perth Glory’s Members Equity Stadium will be put on hold, as the state budget has reportedly failed to set aside the $25 million needed for the project.
The stadium, with a current capacity of 18,000, is a potential home venue for Super 14 team Western Force, while Perth Glory is yet to confirm its home venue for the season.
The East Perth stadium has been continually scrutinised in the past for its inadequate parking, public transport access and capacity.
The government’s Major Stadia Taskforce website says “Perth’s facilities are not up to the standard.”
Plans for the extensive redevelopment, increasing capacity to around 35,000, will be delayed until a report from Taskforce Chairman John Langoulant outlines the future development plans for major stadiums across Perth.
In its Interim Report published in 2006, the taskforce suggested Perth’s next major sporting stadium should have 60,000 seats, with the capacity to expand in the future.
The redevelopment of Members Equity Stadium would be essential for Western Force with their current membership exceeding 20,000 spectators.
“[It is] critical for the future of Super 14 Rugby in West Australia…that we play in a proper rectangular stadium,” coach John Mitchell said today.
Perth Glory’s Media and Communications Manager Mark White did not wish to comment on the budget omission, but confirmed Glory would announce a permanent venue in the coming weeks.
Member’s Equity Stadium was “probably the most viable venue,” Mr White said and new owner Tony Sage only wanted the best venue for the spectators.
Perth Glory attendances were not so impressive, falling from a peak 14,725 in 1998-99 to a mere 7,671 last year.
