Fill A Cup for Cancer

by Claire Kirkham

May 16, 2006

Whether you prefer tea or coffee it doesn’t matter, all are encouraged to take part in the City of Fremantle’s Biggest Morning Tea on Thursday May 25th.

Fremantle Mayor Peter Tagliaferri will be sweating it out behind the coffee machine to help raise money for Cancer Council Australia, an organization that supports cancer research, prevention and patient support.

With more than 88,000 cases of cancer being diagnosed in Australia each year Mayor Tagliaferri said fundraising events such as these were extremely important.

“At some point in our lives, we will be touched by the effects of cancer, whether through personal illness or the loss of a loved relative, friend or colleague, yet something as simple as a morning tea allows us to come together to make a collective contribution in doing something positive,” he said.

Last year, more than 280,000 Australians participated raising over $7.2 million dollars, and the event was recognized by the Guinness Book of Records for setting the world record for the largest ever simultaneous tea party.

Professor Alan Coates, CEO of Cancer Council Australia, said: “It was only through the hard work of our world hosts last year that we were able to break the record and raise much needed funds to help reduce the impact of cancer. I would like to congratulate them on their outstanding support and would encourage them and anyone else able to host a morning tea to do so this year.”

Mayor Tagliaferri said: “I’m sure with the community’s support; we can help Cancer Council Australia smash last year’s record to raise even more vital funds for research, education programs and support services for those diagnosed with cancer, their families and carers.”

For those wishing to participate, the morning tea will be held at the reception room in the City of Fremantle administration building between 10.30am and 11.30am on Thursday, May 25th.
