POLICE IN DARK OVER SMS CRIME IDEA

FREMANTLE Police are unaware of a proposed mobile text message policing service proposed by Fremantle mayor Peter Tagliaferri.

A report in The Sunday Times on the weekend detailed the plan but Fremantle Police and the WA Police Media have not been informed of the idea.

When asked about the service, Senior Constable Ray Johnston from Fremantle Police Station was stunned.

"You're joking! That sounds pretty revolutionary doesn't it? I haven't heard anything and I'm in a position where I would have heard about it," he said.

Fremantle mayor Peter Tagliaferri approached Fremantle police with the idea after continuing concern over low police presence in the district.

"There is not enough police covering the Fremantle district and it occurred to me that there are a number of agencies and security services already working in Fremantle round the clock could work together," he said.

The mobile text policing would be similar to the PC cops program in suburbs, which can send telephone messages out to warn residents if police are in the immediate area searching for a criminal.

Mr Tagliaferri said the system allowed police to send text messages to participating agencies, who would then contact the police if they noticed anything suspicious.

"Police instantly have all those extra eyes and ears. The idea is very simple but I expect it could be very effective," he said.

"Right now I'm working with Sargent Merv Lockhardt and Sgt Ross Adams to see if we can get funding from monies seized by the proceeds of crime taskforce."

The trial is expected to cost $5000 and last for three months.
